October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

Use this toolkit to request a proclamation from your elected officials acknowledging October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.  A proclamation is a public or official announcement with the goal to raise awareness.

Steps to obtain a proclamation for October Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Please note that we recommend requesting a proclamation in August or sooner to give offices enough time to process your request. 

  1. Identify what body of government you want to designate October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.  For example:
    1. Town (ex: Town Supervisor)
    2. County (ex: County Commissioner or Executive) 
    3. City (ex: Mayor)
    4. State (ex: Governor)
  2. Find their contact information (email, phone, website form).  You can do this by doing a simple Google search. (Ex: mayor of ___________ contact information)
  3. Reach out to make an official request via email (some offices may have a website form for this instead) using our sample email.  This email also includes a link to the sample text of the proclamation if you wish to also send it as an attachment.
  4. Follow up via email or phone if you have not received a response after a few weeks have passed.
  5. Depending on the office, you may have the official proclamation mailed, emailed or held in the office for you to pick up
  6. Take a picture of you and your proclamation.  We would love to see your baby honored in the picture as well.  This can include a photo of them, a memorial piece or taken in a location that is special to you and your family.
  7. Share your photo on social media and make sure to tag us @starlegacyfoundation so we can share, too!

Frequently Asked Questions

A proclamation is a public or official announcement, especially one dealing with a matter of great importance.

Proclamations raise awareness and recognize important issues such as stillbirth. This is also a beautiful way to honor your baby.

Proclamations are typically signed and issued by federal officials, governors, state legislators, mayors, or other government officials at the local level such as town/village managers or city council members.

The public can request a proclamation in as many places as applicable. For example, you can request a proclamation in your town, your county, your city and your state.

The public can request a proclamation at any time. We suggest making your request for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in August or sooner to allow for enough time to create the proclamation for the month of October.

You need to make this request annually.

You typically will receive a hard copy of the proclamation with a stamp of approval and signature which is either mailed to you or you may have to pick it up in person. You might also receive an email version.
