In this episode Chris Duffy interviews Dr. Nóirín Russell of Cork, Ireland and discusses the importance of understanding stillbirth risk factors, maternal intuition and parenting babies before their birth.
Dr Nóirín Russell, MD, MRCOG, MRCPI, is a medical graduate of University College Cork(2000) and a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (2005) and the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists (2011). She received her MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University College Dublin in 2010, following studies on fetal cardiac function in pregestational type 1 diabetic pregnancy. She was awarded CSCST by the Irish Committee on Higher Training in 2013 and has been on the Medical Council’s register of medical specialists since then. She completed the RCOG/RCR Diploma in advanced Obstetric Ultrasound in 2007 and pursued further specialty training in early pregnancy ultrasound, fetal cardiology and fetal surgery at Necker Enfants Malades Hôpital and Descartes University in Paris 2011-2012.
Dr. Russell took up a post as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cork University Maternity Hospital and University College Cork in 2014. At CUMH, she is the lead clinician for early pregnancy care and a member of the pregnancy loss clinical and research teams as well as the Perinatal Medicine team. She chairs the Local Programme Group which oversees the implementation of national clinical guidelines and she is also a member of the CUMH working group on implementation of the Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System (MN_CMS).
Dr. Russell’s research has resulted in more than20 peer-reviewed original papers and over 80 published conference proceedings. Dr. Russell’s research interests include general and high risk obstetric care, prenatal diagnosis and screening, obstetric ultrasound including fetal cardiology and recurrent miscarriage. She is a member of the British Maternal and Fetal Medicine Society, the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology and the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
Dr. Russell is committed to undergraduate and postgraduate training and is passionate about providing excellent obstetric and gynaecological care for women attending CUMH. She is a lecturer and module coordinator in the University College Cork Masters of Science programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, while maintaining an active teaching role on the medical undergraduate programme. She also supervises research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students which has lead to presentation at local, national and international scientific meetings. She teaches on the ABA-certified midwifery training programme in third trimester obstetric ultrasound, and provides regular training for medical and midwifery staff on obstetric ultrasound and obstetric emergencies.
Dr. Russell’s clinical practice is at the Cork University Maternity Hospital and at Cork Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates.
Dr. Russell was a featured presenter at the Stillbirth Summit 2017. Her presentation was titled Prenatal Parenting: Reframing OB Care from a Traditional Medical Model to a Prenatal Parenting Model .
